Summary
The Volvo V70 has 15 recalls spanning the 1998–2008 model years, with the most serious being a Takata-style driver's airbag inflator defect on 2001–2007 vehicles where long-term heat and humidity exposure can cause the inflator to explode during deployment, sending metal fragments into the driver or other occupants.
The 2004 model year carries two additional serious issues. The front lower control arm fastener can lose tension and eventually separate from the spindle, removing steering and suspension control with little warning. Separately, the fuel pressure sensor can send false readings to the engine computer, triggering misfires that cut torque and can stall the engine unexpectedly. The same fuel pressure sensor stall risk applies to 2003 models through a related filing. For 2002 models, the left and right rear brake light relays can fail to activate when the pedal is pressed, or stay on continuously, leaving following traffic without a clear braking signal from those lower lights. The 2001 model year has two restraint-related issues: the mounting bolt for the ISOFIX child seat bracket may have been insufficiently tightened, which can allow the child restraint to move freely in a crash, and the rear outboard seatbelt anchor bolts may also have been undertightened, reducing their ability to hold occupants during a collision. On 2000 models, the tailgate locking mechanism can fail to latch properly in cold temperatures, allowing the tailgate to swing open while driving or in a crash. The 1999 model can experience throttle position sensor irregularities combined with a dirty throttle housing that trigger a warning light and force the engine into reduced-power limp mode. The 1998 model has two issues: the front turn signal bulb can lose contact with its socket and stop functioning, and on third-row-equipped wagons, the tailpipe is positioned close enough to the rear opening that occupants climbing in or out can contact it and burn themselves. The 2008 model year has a compliance recall involving rear integrated booster seats that were built without required warning labels about child restraint installation.
