3 recalls across 2 model years
The Yamaha Road Star (XV16) has 3 recalls covering the 1999-2001 model years, with the most serious being a transmission defect on 2001 models where internal gear wear can break a retaining circlip, causing the transmission to lock up and instantly seize the rear wheel.
On 2001 models, worn transmission components allow a small circlip to fracture under load. When it does, the transmission locks solid and takes the rear wheel with it, which can throw the rider or cause an immediate loss of control. On 1999 models, exhaust system mounting bolts can work loose over time, allowing the muffler bracket to crack and fail. If the mufflers separate from the motorcycle, they can snag or sever the rear hydraulic brake line as they fall away, reducing or eliminating rear braking.
