4 recalls across 7 model years
The BMW 323CI has 4 recalls covering the 2000–2006 model years, all involving Takata airbag inflators that can rupture or explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a serious injury or death risk to the driver and passengers.
All four recalls center on the same underlying hazard: frontal airbag inflators manufactured by Takata that can fail violently when the airbag fires. The passenger-side inflator recall is the broadest, covering 2000–2006 model years, where non-desiccated Takata inflators containing phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant can explode and scatter sharp metal fragments through the cabin. On the driver side, 2000–2001 model years are covered by overlapping recalls affecting both original-equipment inflators and replacement inflators that may have been installed during prior repairs, meaning vehicles that already had airbag work done are not necessarily clear of the issue. The 2000 model year specifically is also subject to a separate driver-side inflator recall tied to a different inflator type that does not contain stabilized propellant, which can rupture in a crash and also leave the airbag underinflated and unable to properly cushion the driver.
