BMW 328xi Recalls

The BMW 328xi has 7 recalls, with two equally serious concerns standing out: overheating HVAC wiring on 2006-2011 models that can melt connectors and start a fire even when parked, and a Takata-style driver airbag inflator on 2006-2012 models that can explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin.

The airbag inflator issue covers two related situations on 2006-2012 models: the original driver airbag inflator can rupture on deployment, and separately, vehicles where the steering wheel was replaced with a sport or M-sport wheel may have received an inflator with the same rupture risk. Both carry the potential for serious injury or death. The HVAC wiring fire risk on 2006-2011 models is a distinct problem from a second wiring recall covering 2012-2016 models, where an electrical connector can short and also raise the risk of fire.

On the 2009 328xi specifically, the positive battery cable connection at the fuse box can degrade over time, causing intermittent electrical loss and unexpected stalling. The 2014 model year has a fuel pump that can fail without warning, also causing the vehicle to stall.

The lowest-severity recall covers 2012-2015 models and involves side marker lights that may not illuminate, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers at night.
