4 recalls across 8 model years
The BMW 330CI has 4 recalls, all involving Takata airbag inflators that can rupture or explode during deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin — affecting 2000–2006 model years across both driver and passenger sides.
All four recalls trace back to the same underlying hazard: Takata-manufactured frontal airbag inflators that can fail violently when triggered in a crash. On 2002–2006 models, the driver-side inflator can rupture and scatter metal fragments toward the driver or other occupants. The passenger-side inflator on 2000–2006 vehicles carries the same risk, with an explosion capable of producing sharp fragments that can cause serious injury or death. On 2000–2001 models, the driver-side inflators — specifically the Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators made by Takata — can explode during deployment, and in some cases the airbag may also underinflate, reducing crash protection at the same time it poses a fragmentation hazard. Some 2000–2001 vehicles are covered by a separate recall targeting replacement inflators that may have been installed during prior repairs, meaning even vehicles that previously received airbag service could still be affected.
