The 2000 BMW 330CI has 3 recalls, all involving Takata airbag inflators on both the driver and passenger sides that can rupture or explode during deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin.
Both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators are affected. On the driver side, the inflator can either explode with enough force to scatter metal fragments toward the driver, or it can underinflate and fail to cushion the driver in a crash. The passenger side inflator carries a similar risk, where an explosion can send sharp metal fragments toward the front passenger or others in the vehicle. These defects cover the original inflators as well as certain replacement inflators that may have been installed during prior repairs.
