Summary
The BMW X6 has 25 recalls spanning 2007 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2026 models where an incorrectly manufactured instrument panel can block the passenger-side airbag from deploying in a crash, leaving the front passenger without that protection.
The 2024 model year has a separate airbag concern: the passenger knee airbag fabric may be improperly stitched, preventing it from inflating correctly in a crash. On 2021 models, the steering column shaft's universal joint connection may not have been tightened to spec and can work loose, reducing steering control. The 2020-2021 model years have a headlamp issue where a blue light can illuminate and confuse oncoming drivers, and 2020 vehicles have a rear spoiler that can detach at highway speeds and become a hazard for surrounding traffic. The starter motor on 2019-2021 vehicles can overheat and ignite nearby material in the engine compartment.
The 2019 model year carries two suspension concerns: rear upper control arm pivot bolts can break and cause a loss of handling control. On 2018-2019 models, wheel bolts may not have been properly tightened and can loosen and break, allowing a wheel to separate from the vehicle. The 2018 model year also has loose lower control arm suspension bolts that compromise handling, as well as a front lower-left control arm pivot bolt that can fracture and affect steering response. The 2018-2020 backup camera can fail to display an image when reversing.
The child seat anchor bars on 2015-2019 vehicles can degrade with use of rigid ISOFIX connectors, potentially allowing a child seat to shift in a crash. Going back further, the 2013 model year has a power steering fluid leak that can spray onto hot exhaust components and ignite a fire in the engine compartment. The 2012 model year has a Takata passenger airbag inflator that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, an issue concentrated in high-humidity states and territories. The 2009 model has rear brake discs that could crack and cause a loss of braking at the affected wheel. On 2008-2011 models with turbocharged 8- or 12-cylinder engines, the auxiliary water pump circuit board can overheat after the engine is shut off and cause a fire. The 2011 model year additionally has a front driveshaft universal joint seal that can allow water and dirt ingress, leading to accelerated wear and vibration. The 2017 X6 M has a tire information label citing the wrong tire size, and the 2012 X6 M has a seating capacity label that understates occupant count.
