The BMW X6 has 52 recalls spanning 2008 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue being a brake system software defect on 2024–2025 models where the integrated brake system can lose power assist and disable anti-lock braking and stability control, extending stopping distances and reducing vehicle control.
On 2025 models, a related software condition in the stability and brake control module can separately cause rear brake function loss along with ABS and stability control failure. The 2026 model year brings a windshield sealing defect that lets water reach the power distribution box or engine control unit, which can knock out headlights or door functions. Also on 2026 models, a manufacturing error in the instrument panel can prevent the passenger airbag from deploying properly in a crash. The 2025 model year has a seatbelt warning system defect that can fail to alert occupants to an unbuckled belt or cause the airbag system to deploy incorrectly. On 2024 models, the knee airbags for the driver and passenger may not deploy as intended due to a manufacturing defect, and a separate stitching issue with the front passenger knee airbag fabric produces the same result.
The 2023 model year has a transmission control unit that can absorb leaked oil and seize the gears, causing a sudden loss of drive power. The 2021 model year has several issues: a steering column shaft universal joint that can work loose and affect handling, certain Pirelli tires that can lose pressure rapidly while moving, and a braking system fault that can reduce anti-lock braking and power assist. On 2020 models, the starter motor can overheat after repeated start attempts and ignite material in the engine compartment; a front control arm weld can separate and affect handling; and the rear spoiler can detach from the roof and become a road hazard. The 2020–2022 model years have a sunroof that can close automatically when no key fob is present inside the vehicle. Back-up camera software on 2020–2021 models can produce a missing or degraded rear image, and 2020–2021 headlamps may emit a blue light that can confuse oncoming drivers.
On 2019 models, a rear upper control arm pivot bolt can break and affect handling. The 2018 model year has multiple chassis issues: front and rear suspension bolts that may not have been tightened adequately, a left front lower control arm that can break, and wheel bolts that can loosen and allow a wheel to separate from the vehicle entirely.
Going further back, 2015–2019 models have child seat lower anchor bars that can degrade with use of rigid ISOFIX connectors, potentially allowing a child seat to come loose in a crash. On 2012–2013 models, a machined steering gear surface can leak power steering fluid onto hot exhaust components and cause an engine compartment fire. The 2011–2014 model years have front driveshaft universal joints that can admit water and debris, wear prematurely, and cause loss of front wheel drive. On 2008–2014 models, the Takata passenger frontal airbag inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, a defect that extended through multiple repair campaigns. The 2008–2012 models also have driver-side airbag inflators with the same fragmentation risk.
