Two separate airbag concerns affect this model. The front passenger knee airbag may not deploy correctly in a crash due to stitching or manufacturing defects in the airbag fabric or assembly, and prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the issue across all affected vehicles. A related recall extends this concern to the driver's knee airbag as well, which may also fail to deploy as intended. In both cases, an airbag that does not open properly in a crash leaves the occupant's knees and lower legs without the cushioning the system is designed to provide.

Defect

On certain vehicles, the fabric for the passenger-front knee airbag may not have been stitched properly. As a result, the passenger-front knee airbag may not inflate properly in a crash.

Safety Risk

An airbag that doesn't inflate properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the passenger-front knee airbag. BMW recommends not to transport a person in the front-passenger seat until the recall repairs have been completed.
