Summary
The BMW iX has 16 recalls covering 2022-2024 model years, with the most serious being a high-voltage battery defect on 2022-2023 xDrive50 and M60 trims where an internal short circuit can start a fire.
Two separate powertrain stall risks affect recent production. On 2022-2024 iX xDrive50 and M60 models, the cruise control system can reactivate unintentionally while the driver turns the steering wheel at low speed, causing a sudden surge in vehicle speed. On 2022-2023 models across multiple trims, loose or improperly assembled connections inside the combined charging unit can cut electrical power while driving, and a separate battery control unit software fault can cause a sudden loss of drive power in the same year range. A third stall-related issue affects 2022 models specifically, where the battery control unit can reset and disconnect the high-voltage system without warning. These powertrain power-loss issues all raise the risk of a crash.
On the occupant protection side, 2022 models have a driver's front airbag that may not inflate correctly in a crash. Across 2022-2023 iX trims, the airbag control unit software can fail to illuminate the airbag warning light or display warnings when a problem exists in the airbag or pedestrian protection systems, removing the alert that would prompt a driver to seek repair. An earlier software fix for this warning issue did not fully resolve it, and a follow-up remedy was required.
A separate 2022-2023 issue affects the central information display while the vehicle is in valet parking mode: warning messages and warning lights may not appear, leaving whoever is driving unaware of active vehicle faults.
One 2023 iX M60 has a single-vehicle recall covering a weld seam in the electric drive unit's final drive gear that can break and allow the vehicle to roll away if the parking brake is not set. On 2022-2023 xDrive50 models, the artificial sound generator that alerts pedestrians at low speed can fail at startup and produce no external warning sound.
