Summary
The BMW X3 has 56 recalls spanning the 2004–2026 model years, with the most serious current concern being a loose 48V battery cable connection on 2025 models equipped with the 2.0L engine that can cause a short circuit, a fire, or a sudden loss of drive power.
The 2025 model year carries several additional serious recalls. A software fault can cause the steering wheel to move suddenly without driver input. The front left-side swivel bearing can crack and cause a loss of vehicle control. Rear brake hoses can leak and eliminate rear braking along with the anti-lock brake and stability control systems. A front passenger airbag curtain on the right side may have been assembled incorrectly, causing delayed or improper deployment in a crash, and a separate recall covers front passenger airbag fabric that was damaged before installation and may not inflate properly. Damaged front brake discs from transport may reduce braking effectiveness. The 2025–2026 generation also has a recall for unexpected steering wheel rotation while the vehicle is stationary.
The 2022–2024 model years have a door lock recall where the rear door locks can be disengaged in a single motion, allowing doors to open unexpectedly. On 2020 models, the front axle swivel bearings and, on M40i trims, the steering rack pinion teeth can both break and cause loss of steering or vehicle control. The 2020 plug-in hybrid variant can have debris inside the high-voltage battery that causes a short circuit and fire risk. A faulty seat belt buckle sensor on 2020 vehicles can trigger false warnings and, if ignored, disable the pretensioner and airbag systems in a crash, and some 2020 vehicles were shipped without rearview camera software, leaving no image when reversing.
The 2018–2020 era has a cluster of recalls around the instrument panel: a loose panel casing can cause pieces of it to fly into the cabin when the passenger airbag deploys. On 2018–2019 models, the front seatback frame welds can fail, allowing the seat to fold forward or rearward in a crash, and the front passenger seat sensor may misclassify an adult as an absent occupant and deactivate the frontal airbag. The 2018 model also has a rear spoiler that can detach at highway speed and become a road hazard. Across 2018–2023 models, the cargo area tie-down rail can break free in a rear crash and strike rear occupants; prior repair attempts on some 2018 vehicles did not fully resolve the issue, requiring a second fix.
The 2014–2018 diesel xDrive28d and related models have a high-pressure fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine while driving. The 2012–2014 model years have driver airbag inflator recalls where improper welds can allow the inflator housing to separate and send metal fragments into the cabin during deployment; the 2013 model year has a separate but related inflator rupture risk with the same consequence. The 2011 model year has its own driver airbag inflator separation issue along with an electric power steering control module that can shut off suddenly, making the steering wheel very heavy to turn. Going back further, the 2006–2010 model years have a front passenger seat occupant detection mat that can crack with age and deactivate the passenger airbag. The 2004 model year carries a Takata airbag recall, limited to vehicles that may have received a replacement sport or M-sport steering wheel
