30 recalls across 13 model years
The BMW X4 has 30 recalls spanning 2014 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2026 models where an improperly sealed windshield allows water into the electrical system, which can knock out the headlights while driving.
On the mechanical side, 2024 models have a steering gear that can work loose and cause loss of steering control. The 2025 model year has a cracked inner roof frame near the head airbag that can damage the airbag during deployment, reducing its protection in a crash. Also on 2025 models, a fuel tank inlet check valve weld on 2021 vehicles can fail, separating the filling pipe from the tank and creating a fuel leak and fire risk.
The 2021-2023 model years carry a fire risk from the engine starter assembly, where an electrical fault can ignite a fire. On 2022 models, a transmission mechatronics unit can develop an internal leak that may allow the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly, and a tire label may show incorrect tire size and pressure information. The 2023 model year has a separate transmission issue where oil can leak into the transmission control unit, causing the gears to seize and cutting drive power without warning.
The 2020 model year has several serious issues: front axle swivel bearings can fracture and cause loss of vehicle control, the steering rack pinion teeth can break under load and eliminate steering, and a tie rod on M models can fracture under hard use. A software issue on 2020-2021 M40i models can cause loss of brake assist at engine start, though full manual braking remains available. The 2019-2020 model years have a passenger airbag that can damage the instrument panel on deployment, sending panel fragments toward occupants, and 2019 models have a passenger seat sensor that can misread the seat as empty and suppress the airbag entirely. The 2019-2021 rearview camera can display a missing or reduced image when reversing. On 2020-2022 models, the starter relay can corrode, overheat, and short circuit, raising the risk of fire.
Going further back, 2018-2019 production has rear brake calipers with insufficient coating that can reduce braking performance, and front seatback frames that can fold forward or rearward in a crash. The 2015-2018 model years have a wiring connector that can short circuit and start a fire. The 2015 model year has a driver airbag inflator with a weld defect that can cause the housing to separate and send metal fragments into the cabin during deployment. The 2014-2015 model years have a Takata-related driver airbag inflator that can rupture explosively on deployment, scattering sharp metal fragments toward the driver and other occupants. The 2015-2017 model years have child seat lower anchor bars that may be damaged and fail to properly restrain a child seat in a crash.
