6 recalls across 3 model years
The BMW 335D has 6 recalls covering the 2009–2011 model years, with the most serious being a driver-side airbag inflator that can explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the driver and other occupants.
Two separate recalls address this airbag inflator issue on 2009–2011 models. One covers the original factory airbag inflator, while the other specifically affects vehicles where the steering wheel was replaced with a sport or M-sport wheel carrying the same defective inflator. Both carry the same consequence: a violent inflator rupture during a crash that can scatter sharp metal fragments throughout the cabin.
On the electrical side, the positive battery cable connection at the fuse box can degrade on 2009–2011 models, causing an intermittent loss of power that can stall the vehicle without warning. This issue was addressed across two overlapping recalls covering the full 2009–2011 range. Separately, the wiring and electrical connectors for the heating and air conditioning system on 2009–2011 vehicles can overheat, melt the connectors, and create a fire risk even when the vehicle is parked and unattended.
The 2011 model year also has a CV joint recall shared with several other BMW models of that era. If the joint breaks, the vehicle loses drive power, which can create a crash risk particularly at highway speeds or in traffic.
