6 recalls across 3 model years
The BMW 428i has 6 recalls covering the 2014–2016 model years, with the most serious being an electrical wiring connector defect on 2014–2016 vehicles where a short circuit can start a fire.
Three separate recalls address airbag inflator failures across the 2014–2015 model years. The driver-side frontal airbag inflator on 2014–2015 models can rupture explosively and send metal fragments into the cabin, raising the risk of serious injury or death. Side and window airbag inflators on 2014–2015 models carry the same risk, with fragments capable of traveling both into and out of the vehicle. A related head airbag inflator on 2014 models can fail at a weld joint, either leaking gas or rupturing and scattering fragments in the same way.
On 2015 convertible models, a software error causes the driver's frontal airbag to deploy with incorrect timing in a crash, which reduces the protection it provides. The 2014–2015 model years also have a fuel pump that can fail without warning and stall the engine while driving.
