17 recalls across 10 model years
The BMW 430i has 17 recalls spanning the 2017 through 2026 model years, with the most serious being a 2026 model year issue where positive battery cables can disconnect from the power distribution box, causing an engine stall and a potential fire.
On 2025 models, a loose connection between the starter-generator and battery can also cause an engine stall or overheat the wiring to the point of fire. The 2024 convertible has a separate fire risk: the cylinder head cover can crack and leak oil onto hot engine or exhaust components. For 2021-2024 models, a starter assembly defect can cause the wiring to overheat and catch fire, and on 2021-2022 models specifically, the starter relay can corrode, short circuit, and raise the same fire risk.
The 2022-2023 model years have a body control module software fault that can prevent doors from locking while the vehicle is moving, allowing them to open in a crash. On 2021 convertibles, the head-thorax side airbag can fail to deploy correctly in a side-impact crash. The 2021 model year also has a seat belt retractor that may not function as intended during a crash, and a rearview camera that can display a missing or reduced image while reversing. Going back to 2019-2020, the driver and passenger knee airbags may have been improperly folded and can fail to deploy correctly. A 2022 Gran Coupe trim has a sunroof that can close automatically without the key fob present inside the vehicle.
On 2018 models, the front seat belt emergency locking retractors may have been built with incompatible locking mechanism housings, meaning the belt may not hold an occupant in a crash. The 2017 model year has two separate airbag concerns: seat-mounted side airbag inflators that may fail to ignite in a crash, and a broader seat-mounted side airbag filing covering the same failure mode across a wider range of BMW products that year. A 2019 model year issue involves a small number of vehicles where the front passenger airbag inflator was incorrectly manufactured and may not deploy properly. On 2021-2022 vehicles, a software fault in the audio module can prevent the seat belt reminder chime from sounding.
