Summary
The BMW F650GS has 7 recalls spanning the 2000–2008 production run, with the most serious being a handlebar clamping defect on 2007 models where the fork bridge and clamping blocks can fail to hold the handlebars securely, allowing them to shift position while riding or maneuvering.
The 2008 model year carries the heaviest recall activity. Front brake disc fasteners on 2008 models may be too short to reach proper torque, allowing the brake disc to work loose over time and reduce braking effectiveness. Separately on 2008 models, a drive chain that can snap under load poses a more acute hazard: in the worst case, the broken chain can become wedged between the rear wheel and the frame, locking the rear wheel while riding. There is also a chain sprocket fastener issue on 2008 models where the fasteners can loosen and cause sudden loss of drive power. The 2006 model year has a sidestand weld that was not properly positioned, weakening the stand enough that it can collapse under load and drop the motorcycle onto the rider or a bystander nearby. Going back to the 2000 model year, under hard off-road use combining rear braking and throttle in low gears, the rear brake caliper support can bend far enough to let the brake hose fitting contact the swingarm, which can damage the hose and compromise rear braking.
