6 recalls across 13 model years
The BMW K 1600 GTL has 6 recalls spanning 2012 through 2025, with the most serious recent issue being a front suspension spring strut on 2024 models where a faulty proportional valve can loosen and cause strut failure, leaving the rider with reduced stability and an elevated crash risk.
On 2017-2025 models, the seal around the reverse gear control unit can deteriorate and let moisture in, causing the unit to overheat and raising the risk of a fire. The 2019-2020 model years have a separate suspension concern: the rear link strut connecting the suspension to the frame can crack or fail, allowing the rear of the motorcycle to contact the rear wheel and destabilize the bike while riding. On 2018-2020 models, certain transmission components can engage two gears simultaneously or shed material internally, which can lock the rear wheel and cause a sudden loss of control.
Going back to earlier production, 2011-2014 models have a fuel pump that can crack during operation and leak fuel, which can ignite if it contacts a hot surface or spark. The 2012 model year has an additional fuel pump concern specific to vehicles that received a prior repair under an earlier recall: if the fuel pump was not subsequently replaced, a fuel leak and fire risk remains.
