4 recalls across 11 model years
The BMW R 1200 GS has 4 recalls spanning the 2004–2014 production run, with the most serious being a fuel pump that can crack and leak fuel on 2011–2014 models, creating a fire risk while the motorcycle is running.
The 2013 model year has a separate issue where internal transmission pressure can push the output seal out of position, allowing gear oil to drip onto the rear tire. Oil on the rear tire can cause a sudden loss of traction. On 2005–2010 models, the rear wheel mounting flange can crack, allowing the mounting bolts to loosen and the wheel to lose its secure attachment to the motorcycle, with serious stability consequences. The earliest production year, 2004, has a fuel pump with an undersized O-ring seal that allows water to reach the pump electronics, causing the engine to stall or refuse to start without warning.
