3 recalls across 2 model years
The BMW R1150GS has 3 recalls covering the 2000 and 2003 model years, with the most serious being a 2003 transmission defect where third and fourth gear wheels can sit loose on the intermediate shaft, causing the gearbox to engage fifth and sixth gear simultaneously and either seize the transmission or cut drive power entirely.
The 2003 model year also has a rear brake hose that can split when the rear suspension reaches full extension, allowing brake fluid to escape and reducing or eliminating rear braking force. On 2000 models, the front brake line runs too close to the speedometer cable, and the cable can chafe through the brake line during normal fork travel, leaking fluid and reducing front braking capability.
