3 recalls across 2 model years
The BMW R1150GS has 3 recalls covering the 2000 and 2003 model years, with the most serious being a transmission defect on 2003 models where gear wheels can be improperly seated, causing two gears to engage at once and either shattering internal components or locking the transmission solid while riding.
The 2003 model year also has a rear brake hose that can split open when the rear suspension reaches full extension, draining brake fluid and eliminating rear braking. On 2000 models, the front brake line runs too close to the speedometer cable, and the two can rub against each other as the fork compresses and rebounds, eventually wearing through the brake line and causing front brake fluid loss.
