Summary
The BMW R1200RT has 5 recalls spanning the 2004–2014 production run, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2014 models where the rear shock absorber piston rod can break without warning while riding, causing the motorcycle to lose stability and the rider to lose control.
The 2014 model year has a second recall, limited to units fitted with the police authority package, where activating the "light switch off" function also disables the brake light, making the motorcycle invisible to following traffic during braking. Going back to the 2005 model year, two separate fuel system issues apply. The fuel pump and auxiliary fuel pump flange can develop cracks that leak fuel once the engine starts and pressure builds, creating a fire risk near any ignition source. Separately, a fuel tank bleed hose pinched during assembly can deform the tank over time until it contacts the steering lock mechanism and prevents the bars from turning freely. On the earliest affected year, 2004 models have a throttle body opening where small stones or road debris can lodge between the throttle pulley and engine block, restricting throttle movement and making precise control of engine speed difficult.
