The fuel pump on certain vehicles may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing pressure to build until the pump cracks and fuel begins leaking. In the presence of any ignition source, that leak can ignite. On four-wheel and all-wheel drive models, a transfer case defect can cause the front or rear wheels to lock up without warning, leaving the driver unable to steer or brake as expected. There is also a tire concern: certain Continental tires fitted to this vehicle may have been over-cured during production, which can cause the sidewall to crack or the belt layers to separate from the tread. Either failure can result in sudden and complete air loss while driving, with the tread or belt potentially separating from the tire entirely.
