30 recalls across 12 model years
The Chrysler Sebring has 30 recalls spanning the 1995–2010 production run, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2010 models where the occupant restraint control module can short circuit and disable the front airbags, side airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners simultaneously, leaving occupants without crash protection.
The 2007 model year carries several notable issues. The anti-lock brake software can cause the rear brakes to lock up during braking, leading to loss of control. The hood latch striker can break and allow the hood to fly open while driving. On 2.4L-equipped 2007 models, coolant can be drawn into the left radiator fan motor connector, causing an electrical short and an engine compartment fire. The front seat track position sensors used by the airbag system can fail, causing the airbag to deploy at full pressure regardless of how close a smaller occupant is sitting to it. The automatic temperature control HVAC software on 2007 models can also disable the windshield defroster and defogger, reducing visibility in cold or humid conditions.
The 2004–2005 model years have rear seatbelt anchor bolt issues: on 2004 convertibles the left rear retractor bolt may not be properly tightened, and on 2005 models both rear retractor and turning loop bolts can be loose, either of which can allow the belt to fail to hold an occupant in a crash. The 2001–2005 model years share a passenger airbag concern where the deploying bag can strike a lowered sun visor and knock it loose, sending it rearward into an occupant. A separate 2001 issue on two-door coupes involves the passenger airbag door not staying attached during deployment, which can also send debris toward occupants. On 2001 models, the crankshaft position sensor wiring harness can wear against a heat shield, ground out, and cause the engine to stall without warning. There is also a fuel return hose on 2001 models that can deteriorate and leak fuel, and automatic transmission cooler hoses that can leak fluid onto hot exhaust components and start a fire.
Going back to mid-production years, 1997 models have a passenger headrest support bracket weld that can fail. The 1998 JXI Limited convertible has a steering column pinch bolt retaining pin that can snag the driver's floor mat and interfere with steering. The 1996 model year has multiple issues: the power mirror switch on convertibles can accumulate road salt and short circuit, potentially causing a fire; the throttle control cable on 2.5L V6 models can fray and cause the throttle to stick; and the brake booster vacuum hose can be improperly seated on the intake manifold, raising idle speed and reducing braking power. On 1995 models, the lower control arm ball joint can lose lubrication and separate without warning, causing sudden loss of steering and handling control, and a rubber boot on the lower lateral ball joint can allow dirt and water intrusion that accelerates wear to the point of separation.
