The 1988 Dodge Dakota has two recalls, both rated equally serious: one where a rear wheel can detach while driving, and one where the steering gear can break free from the frame without warning, either of which can cause a sudden loss of control.

On the suspension side, the lug nuts securing the rear wheels to the axle shafts can work loose because the brake drum does not seat fully on the axle, leaving the wheel able to separate from the truck entirely. On the steering side, the frame can crack in the area where the steering gear is bolted, allowing the gear to pull away from the frame and leaving the driver with no ability to steer the vehicle.
