Summary
The Dodge Neon has 16 recalls covering the 1995-2001 model years, with the most serious being a 1995 steering column coupler that can disconnect after an underbody impact, leaving the driver with no steering control.
The 1995 model year carries the heaviest concentration of recalls. Beyond the steering issue, the anti-lock brake master cylinder rear seal on 1995 models with ABS can allow air into the brake system, producing spongy pedal feel and extended stopping distances. Rear brake hose mounting bracket screws on 1995 vehicles can fail, letting the hoses shift out of position and eventually leak fluid, which reduces braking performance. Fuel and rear brake tubes on those same 1995 models can corrode where they contact a rubber isolator, leading to brake fluid loss or a fuel leak that can cause a fire. Two separate issues on 1995 vehicles can also cause the engine to stall while driving: moisture can enter the powertrain control module and cause erratic behavior, and rear brake line mounting bracket screws can allow brake lines to shift out of position.
On 2000 models, condensation from the crankcase ventilation system can freeze inside the throttle body in very cold temperatures, preventing the throttle from returning to idle and causing unintended acceleration. Also on 2000 models, the front suspension lower control arm weld can fail, allowing the pivot tube to separate and causing loss of vehicle control. The passenger-side front airbag on 2000 vehicles may not inflate properly in a crash, leaving the front passenger without adequate restraint. A brake booster vacuum hose on 2000 models can swell and detach from the intake manifold when exposed to heat and oil, causing loss of power brake assist and a rise in idle speed.
The 1998 model year has a rear suspension crossmember that may be missing spot welds, which can allow structural cracks to develop and reduces crash protection in a rear impact. On 1996 models, the engine wiring harness can contact the exhaust gas recirculation tube, short circuit, and cause various electrical malfunctions including engine stall. The 1997 model year has a solid-state cooling fan relay that can fail from heat stress, causing the fans to stop and the engine to overheat, affecting both driveability and emissions. On 2001 models with the Sport Appearance Package or R/T Package equipped with 16-inch wheels, the tire placard lists incorrect recommended tire sizes, which can lead an owner to install the wrong replacement tires.
