7 recalls across 10 model years
The Dodge Ram 2500 has 7 recalls covering 2003 through 2012 model years, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2012 models equipped with the Electronic Vehicle Information Center option, where a steering wheel wiring harness can rub against the driver airbag retainer spring and cause the airbag to deploy without warning.
The 2011-2012 model years with a column shifter have a separate concern: the transmission can be shifted out of park without the brake pedal depressed or a key in the ignition, creating a rollaway risk. Going back to the 2005-2009 model years, both the driver and passenger frontal airbag inflators can rupture during deployment, sending metal fragments into the cabin and potentially injuring the driver or other occupants. The 2003 model year has a related passenger-side inflator defect where excessive internal pressure during deployment can cause the same type of rupture and fragment scatter.
On the steering side, 2003-2008 four-wheel-drive models can develop a broken left tie rod assembly, which removes steering control entirely. The 2006-2007 model years with manual transmissions have a clutch ignition interlock switch with return springs that can break, either preventing the engine from starting or allowing the vehicle to move unexpectedly when the ignition is turned.
