The 1996 Dodge Stratus has 5 recalls, the most serious involving corroded ABS brake components that can cause the vehicle to swerve sharply to one side during braking, and a front lower ball joint that can separate and cause a sudden loss of steering control.

The hood has a secondary latch spring that can pop out of its retention hole if the hood is slammed, and if the primary latch also fails to catch, the hood can fly open while driving. On the brake side, the master cylinder can leak brake fluid through a damaged seal, reducing braking effectiveness in half the hydraulic circuit. On automatic transmission models, a cable adjustment issue in the shifter can make it too easy to move the gear selector out of Park without the key in the correct position, bypassing the ignition-park interlock that normally prevents the car from being shifted while unattended.
