32 recalls across 13 model years
The Dodge Journey has 32 recalls spanning the 2009–2020 production run, with the most serious being a cruise control software defect on 2014–2018 models where the system can fail to deactivate, causing the vehicle to maintain or increase speed despite the driver's attempts to cancel it.
The final production years carry several notable issues. On 2019–2020 models, a cracked microprocessor can cause the rearview camera to display a distorted or blank image while backing up. The 2018 model year has its own rearview camera concerns: the image can either fail to appear at all while reversing or take longer than two seconds to display after selecting reverse. Also on 2018 models, rear brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating can develop internal gas pockets and reduce braking force, and an underhood wiring fault can cause the engine to stall while driving. The 2017–2018 model years have amber side reflectors that do not reflect brightly enough, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers at night.
The 2016 model year has two powertrain concerns: a transmission pump that can seize and cut drive power entirely, and intermittent crankshaft or camshaft sensors that can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly. From 2012–2015, water can wick through the anti-lock brake wiring harness into the ABS module, disabling both anti-lock braking and electronic stability control. On 2011–2015 models with the 2.4L engine, the plastic engine cover can shift from road vibration and contact the exhaust manifold, creating a fire risk. The 2011–2015 model years also have a driver's frontal airbag that can deploy without warning if the steering wheel wiring harness chafes and shorts. The 2009–2016 model years share a power steering return hose that can rupture in cold weather at startup, causing a sudden loss of power steering assist and requiring significantly more steering effort at low speeds.
The 2012 model year with the 3.6L engine has a connecting rod defect that can cause the engine to seize. The 2010–2011 model years have a power steering pressure hose that can separate at its crimped end, spraying fluid onto hot engine components and starting a fire. The 2009 model year carries the heaviest cluster of issues: an engine wiring harness that can contact the transaxle mount and cause an engine compartment fire on 3.5L-equipped vehicles; an unused auxiliary power outlet connector that can corrode, short, and overheat to the point of catching fire; an airbag control unit that can corrode and fail to deploy airbags in a crash; front door wiring that can fatigue and break, disabling the side impact sensors so side airbags may not deploy in a crash; and reversed wiring on the steering column airbag connector that can prevent the driver's airbag from inflating properly in a crash.
