Summary
The Ducati 1199 Panigale has 14 recalls covering 2012 through 2014 model years, with the most serious being a swingarm fastener defect on 2012 models where an incorrect screw securing the swingarm to the rear suspension linkage can fail, causing suspension collapse and loss of control.
Several other suspension and steering issues affect early production. On 2012 and 2013 models from the initial production window, the swingarm shaft pivots can loosen and separate from the swingarm, again removing the rider's ability to control the motorcycle. The 2014 Panigale S, Panigale R, and Superleggera trims have a separate rear shock absorber concern: the damper rod nut can loosen, degrading shock performance and potentially causing the shock to disassemble while riding.
The steering damper is another concentration of issues on 2012-2013 models. Mounting screws at the steering head can back out from insufficient thread-locking compound, and the damper's uniball bearing can slip out of its seat due to assembly tolerance errors. Either failure allows the steering damper to detach entirely, leaving the rider with unpredictable steering response.
On the brake side, 2012-2013 models have a front brake master cylinder reservoir hose that can contact the threaded end of the reservoir retaining screw, eventually wearing through the hose, leaking brake fluid, and causing partial or complete front brake failure.
There is also a fire risk on 2012-2013 models: the exhaust butterfly valve cable cover sits close enough to the catalytic converter that heat can melt or ignite the cover, producing smoke or fire.
Rounding out the recall list, 2012-2013 Panigale and Panigale S models have an electrical connection at the dashboard that can interrupt power to the left handlebar switch, disabling the horn, high beam, right turn signals, and instrument panel display.
