Summary
The Ford B600 has 4 recalls covering the 1990-1993 model years, with the most serious being a 1990 electrical issue on school bus chassis where a battery system fault can shut down the engine, drop power steering assist, or cut hydraulic brake boost, leaving the driver with degraded steering and braking.
The 1993 model year has two separate throttle-related concerns, both resulting in the engine failing to return to idle. On Cummins 5.9L 160-horsepower rotary injection pump models, the accelerator return spring can fracture, preventing the throttle from dropping back on its own. On automatic transmission-equipped 1993 models, the accelerator lever and transmission modulator lever can bind against each other and hold engine speed up, with the same end result: the vehicle does not slow as expected when the driver lifts off the accelerator. Going back to 1990, the steering gear contains a snap ring that can fracture and progressively damage the internal ball guide, making right turns increasingly difficult, and an undersized O-ring seal that allows internal fluid leakage within the steering gear.
