Summary
The Ford F-350 SD has 21 recalls spanning 2009 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2025-2026 models where the rear driveshaft friction weld can fail, causing the driveshaft to separate and resulting in sudden loss of drive power.
Several other drivetrain and steering issues cluster around recent production years. On 2025 models, cracked diesel fuel return line connectors can leak fuel into the engine compartment near hot components, raising the risk of fire, and the steering column shifter can detach from an inadequate weld, leaving the driver unable to shift into park and creating a rollaway risk. The 2023 model year carries its own set of serious issues: the steering column upper shaft bolts can be missing or loose, allowing the column to separate from adjoining components and leaving the driver with no steering input; single-rear-wheel models with the 10.5-inch rear axle shaft can suffer a broken left rear axle shaft, causing loss of drive power or rollaway when in park; and a faulty solder joint in the digital instrument cluster can cause the entire panel to go dark, taking the speedometer and warning lights with it. A software issue on certain 2023 vehicles previously repaired under an earlier recall can also cause the rearview camera to fail to display when using the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist feature, a problem that prior repair attempts did not fully resolve.
The 2022 model year has a driver airbag cover that can break apart during a crash and project fragments toward occupants. On 2020-2021 models, the steering column upper shaft can detach from the column entirely, and the rear axle housing on 6.7L diesel trucks equipped with Dana 275 rear axles can deform under load and lead to driveshaft separation. The 2020-2022 360-degree camera system can also fail to display a proper rearview image in certain lighting conditions. A separate 2020 issue affects 6.7L diesel models specifically: a transmission washer can disintegrate and send debris into the park mechanism, preventing the transmission from engaging or holding park. The 2020 model year also has a compliance recall where certain Crew Cab Long Box configurations were missing required load rating labels.
Going back to the 2017-2019 era, trucks with the electric tailgate latch can release the tailgate unexpectedly due to water intrusion in the wiring, potentially dropping cargo into traffic. The 2017-2018 4x4 models have a driveshaft damper that can shift out of position over time, eventually causing driveshaft fracture and loss of drive power. A narrow group of 2017 trucks built in a short window in August and September 2016 has a fuel tank strap that can separate and allow the tank to contact the ground, creating a fuel leak and fire risk. The 2016 model year has two issues: a small production window received tires with inner sidewall damage that can rupture while driving, and dust accumulation in the steering wheel clock spring can prevent the driver airbag from deploying in a crash.
The 2012-2014 model years, on trucks modified by Stahl or Manning Equipment and equipped with Muncie Power Products PTO assemblies, share an oil leak from the PTO pressure switch that can soak into an exhaust thermal blanket and ignite. The 2019-2023 SuperCab models are subject to a documentation recall where the owner's manual omits instructions for adjusting certain head restraints.
