4 recalls across 3 model years
The GMC Topkick 8500 has 4 recalls covering 2003 through 2008, with the most serious being a cracked fuel pump outlet plug on 2008 models that can spray fuel and create a fire hazard. The 2007 model year carries two separate concerns. The rear drive axle housing on 7500 and 8500 series trucks can develop fatigue cracks over time and eventually fracture at the outboard end, allowing the hub, axle shaft, wheel, and brake assembly to separate from the vehicle while driving. There is also a 2007 air compressor issue where the system may not build enough pressure to support the air brake system, leaving the brakes locked in the applied position and preventing the truck from moving. Going back to the earliest production year covered, 2003 models have a steering gear defect that causes a curb-strike sensation and cracking or pinging sounds when turning, with the steering wheel sitting off-center and requiring noticeably more effort to turn, which raises the risk of a crash.
