9 recalls across 15 model years
The Harley-Davidson FLHX has 9 recalls spanning 2008 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2024 models where the voltage regulator output wire can rub against the crankcase, short circuit, and cut both electrical power and drive power without warning while the motorcycle is moving.
The 2024 through 2026 model years also have a separate issue where a blocked breather port in the airbox backplate allows crankcase pressure to build up, causing oil to eject from the fill spout when the dipstick is removed during a check. On 2020 through 2022 models, a software error can cause the brake lights to illuminate when the rider has not applied the brakes, which can confuse following drivers.
Going back to the 2017 and 2018 model years, the clutch assembly can fail to fully disengage while the engine is running and the motorcycle is in gear, leaving the rider unable to prevent the bike from moving. The 2017 model year has an additional engine concern: an incorrectly installed clamp on the oil cooler line can allow the line to detach, spilling oil suddenly onto the rear tire and causing a loss of traction. The same clutch disengagement problem also affects 2016 models under a separate recall, and 2014 through 2015 models share the same failure mode as well.
On 2014 and 2015 models, the saddlebag mounting hardware can fail to hold the bags securely, allowing one to separate from the motorcycle at speed and become a road hazard. Further back, 2008 through 2011 models equipped with anti-lock brakes can develop deposits inside the ABS hydraulic control unit that cause a valve to stick, reducing braking ability.
