4 recalls across 12 model years
The Honda CR-Z has 4 recalls covering the full 2011–2015 production run, the most serious being a driver's frontal airbag inflator on 2011–2015 models that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, risking serious injury or death.
The airbag inflator issue spans the entire production run of the CR-Z and represents the most widespread safety concern across these vehicles. When the driver's airbag deploys, the inflator can burst rather than inflate normally, turning the module itself into a source of shrapnel directed at the driver and nearby occupants.
The 2011 model year with a manual transmission has two separate powertrain concerns. Under certain conditions combining extreme temperatures, high electrical loads, and engine speeds near stalling, the engine control unit can activate a stall-prevention routine that inadvertently commands the hybrid electric motor to apply torque. This can cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly, raising the risk of a crash or injury to anyone in its path.
