5 recalls across 3 model years
The Honda CRF1100 Africa Twin has 5 recalls covering the 2020-2022 model years, with the most serious being a software error on 2020-2021 DCT-equipped models where the engine control unit can drop its internal communication link, release the clutch, and cause an engine stall or sudden loss of drive power while riding.
The 2022 model year has a separate engine control software issue where the wheelie control feature can malfunction and cut power to the rear wheel unexpectedly, raising the risk of a crash. On 2020 DCT models specifically, a second ECU software problem can also cause the engine to stall without warning. These two 2020 DCT software issues are distinct from each other, with the 2020-2021 communication fault described above being the broader of the two.
The 2020 model year also has a brake-related recall where the anti-lock brake modulator can produce reduced hydraulic pressure, extending stopping distances. Rounding out the 2020 issues, a wiring harness at the left handlebar switch can be improperly assembled, causing the horn or high-beam headlight to stop working, reducing the rider's ability to signal others or see clearly at night.
