The 2003 model year has three separate electrical and brake issues. Two involve wire harnesses routed in a way that allows connectors to rub against the fuel tank, eventually causing a short circuit that blows an ignition fuse and stalls the engine without warning. A related 2003 electrical issue involves a ground distribution connector in the main wire harness that can overheat and short multiple circuits, including the fuel pump, again stalling the engine without warning. All three of these 2003 electrical defects carry the same crash risk from unexpected engine shutdown.
The 2003 model also has a brake concern separate from the 2008 hose issue: the proportioning control valve in the combined brake system contains a seal that can be improperly shaped, allowing brake fluid to leak. If riding continues after the leak begins, the rear brake can become fully inoperative.
