4 recalls across 2 model years
The Indian Motorcycle Chief has 4 recalls spanning the 2009 and 2014 model years, with the most serious being a rear wheel rim defect on 2009 models where the rim can crack and cause a sudden loss of tire pressure, leaving the rider with little time to recover control.
The other 2009 issue involves the side stand, which can fail to retract after contacting the ground while moving, disrupting the motorcycle's stability and creating a crash risk. There is also a headlight switching problem on 2009 models where slowly transitioning between high and low beam activates both bulbs at once, causing the body control module to read a false overload and cut voltage to the entire headlight circuit, leaving the rider without forward lighting. On 2014 models, a poor electrical connection at the vehicle control module can cause the headlights to flicker intermittently or go out entirely while riding; when this happens, the high beam indicator on the gauge cluster flashes as a warning sign.
