The Indian Chief has 5 recalls covering the 1999–2003 production run, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2003 models where windshield mounting bolts can break under stress, allowing the windshield to detach and strike the rider or cause loss of control. The 2002 model year has two separate issues. The rear axle can deform under repeated heavy loads, wearing down the rear wheel bearings until they overheat and seize, which can cause a crash. There is also a rear brake caliper that can sit out of alignment with the rotor, causing the brake to overheat and fail. Going back to 1999, the handlebar riser top clamp can allow the handlebars to move excessively, making the motorcycle difficult to steer. That same model year, rear shock absorber mounting bolts can break on units built with Sway-A-Way shocks, causing the rear suspension to collapse while riding.
