7 recalls across 5 model years
The Indian Chief Classic has 7 recalls covering 2014 through 2018, with the most serious being a fuel rail contact issue on 2014-2017 models where the rail can rub against nearby components, leak fuel, and create a fire risk near any ignition source.
The 2015-2016 model years have a rear brake master cylinder defect that can reduce or completely eliminate rear braking power, extending stopping distances and raising the risk of a crash. On the electrical side, the 2018 model year has a recall where the motorcycle can start unintentionally, creating a carbon monoxide hazard if the bike is parked in an enclosed space. The 2017-2018 model years may have been fitted with a European-specification halogen headlight assembly rather than the correct US-market unit, which produces different light output and can reduce how visible the motorcycle is to other road users at night.
The 2014-2016 models have an exhaust temperature issue: an engine misfire can allow unburned fuel to pass through the exhaust system, raising exhaust temperatures to the point where a fire can start. Front lighting failures affect two separate year ranges. On 2015 models, the electrical connector for the vehicle control module can fail and cut power to the headlight and other front lights while riding. The same loss-of-front-lighting consequence applies to 2014 models through a separate vehicle control module fault.
