Summary
The INFINITI Q50 has 15 recalls spanning 2013 through 2021, with the most serious recent issue being a software defect on 2021 models where the engine control module can misread rapid acceleration, cut fuel to the engine, and cause an unexpected stall while driving. The 2021 model year also has a separate software error that can blank the audio/video display screen, preventing the rearview camera image from appearing when backing up.
The 2016-2018 models equipped with the 2.0-liter engine have a fuel pump control module software problem that allows the main fuel tank to run too low to supply the engine, which can also cause the engine to stall while driving. The 2017 model year has a driver airbag inflator that may be improperly welded, causing it to crack when the airbag deploys and fail to fully inflate, reducing crash protection.
The 2014-2016 models with Direct Adaptive Steering (a steer-by-wire system) can experience a startup error that alters steering responsiveness and changes the turning radius in ways the driver does not expect. On 2014 models specifically, that same steer-by-wire system has two additional problems: cold weather can delay engagement of the mechanical backup steering, and a separate software fault can disable the steering systems entirely, in both cases leaving the driver with no steering control. A 2014-only software issue with the passenger seat occupant classification system can incorrectly read an occupied front passenger seat as empty, silently deactivating the passenger airbag without triggering any warning light.
The 2014 hybrid models have a handful of distinct issues: a damaged transmission housing that can crack, fracture, and shed debris onto the road; an electric motor inverter communication error that can cut drive power when running in electric-only mode; and an accelerator throttle chamber that can reopen unexpectedly, causing gradual unintended acceleration. That throttle issue extends to 2013-2015 hybrid models.
