Summary
The Kia Sephia has 8 recalls covering the 1994-2000 production run, the most serious being a front seatbelt buckle defect on 2000 models where the buckle produces a click that sounds like a successful latch but the belt is not secured and will pull free under tension in a crash.
The 1995 model year has a separate front seatbelt buckle issue where the buckle can false-latch, again leaving an occupant unrestrained in a crash. The 1998 model year carries the heaviest share of recalls. Two distinct fuel pump electrical faults affect that year: a poorly grounded junction connector can generate heat and resistance that causes the engine to stall, and corroded connectors elsewhere in the fuel pump circuit can eventually starve the pump of current and stall the engine as well. There is also a hazard switch electrical contact problem on 1998 vehicles with lower mileage that can disable both the hazard lights and turn signals, removing the ability to warn other drivers when stopping or turning. Wiper linkage on 1998 models can also disengage from the motor drive when pushing against ice or snow, or the wiper arm can slip on its mount, leaving the driver without wipers in conditions where they are needed. A fuel filler valve issue on 1998 vehicles causes the fuel nozzle to shut off before the tank is full, prompting overfilling that can force fuel back out of the filler neck. Going back to the 1994 model year, the vehicle speed sensor can seize and disable the speedometer, leaving the driver without any indication of actual speed, and on vehicles equipped with cruise control, that system stops working as well.
