The 1998 Kia Sephia has 5 recalls, the most serious involving a fuel pump grounding fault that can cause the engine to stall without warning, raising the risk of a crash.
Two recalls address fuel delivery. Beyond the grounding issue, moisture can corrode the fuel pump's electrical connectors over time until the pump stops receiving enough current to run, also causing the engine to stall. A separate fuel system recall involves the onboard refueling vapor recovery valve, which can shut off the fuel nozzle before the tank is full, leading drivers to overfill and causing fuel to spill or spit back from the filler neck. On the electrical side, a faulty contact in the hazard switch can knock out both the hazard lights and turn signals, leaving drivers behind the vehicle without any warning that it is stopping or turning. There is also a visibility concern: the windshield wiper linkage ball socket can slip out of place under load from ice or snow, and the wiper arm retaining nut may not be tight enough to hold the arm in position, either of which can leave the wipers inoperative in bad weather.
