The Kia Spectra has 5 recalls covering 2004-2007 model years, with the most serious being a fuel tank mounting issue on 2004-2007 vehicles where corroded tank straps can fail and allow the fuel tank to drop to the ground, potentially rupturing and leaking fuel near an ignition source.

The fuel tank strap corrosion recall applies specifically to vehicles operated in regions with heavy road salt use, and the same underlying tank-drop risk affects the broader 2004-2007 range built through early 2007, with salt-belt states covering most of the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions.

The 2005 model year carries additional concerns. The steering tie rods on those vehicles can develop internal cracks and fail under normal driving stress, causing sudden loss of steering control. There is also a passenger seat occupant classification sensor issue on 2005 models equipped with the advanced airbag system, where the sensor can misread a child safety seat as an adult occupant. This matters because the airbag may deploy with full force toward a child, rather than suppressing as it should in the presence of a child restraint.
