The 2005 Kia Spectra has 5 recalls, the most serious being steering tie rods that can crack and cause a sudden loss of steering control, and fuel tank straps that can corrode and allow the tank to drop from the vehicle, creating a fire risk.
The steering and fuel tank issues share the top severity level. The tie rod defect can leave the driver unable to steer, while the fuel tank risk is most relevant for vehicles in regions with heavy road salt use during winter, where the mounting straps corrode and fail. If the tank contacts the ground, fuel can leak, and in the presence of an ignition source, a fire can result.
There is also a safety equipment concern: vehicles equipped with the advanced airbag system have a passenger seat sensor that can misclassify a rear-facing child restraint as an adult occupant, which may cause the front passenger airbag to remain active when it should be suppressed.
