11 recalls across 8 model years
The Lincoln MKS has 11 recalls spanning the 2009–2015 production run, with the most serious recent concern being loose fuel tank mounting bolts on certain 2015 models that can allow the fuel tank to separate from the vehicle, leak fuel, and start a fire.
The 2015 model year also has two parking brake recalls: the parking brake controller bracket can be improperly formed so the pawl never fully engages, and a separate issue where the parking brake simply may not hold when applied. Either condition can allow the vehicle to roll away on a slope if the transmission is not left in Park. On 2013–2015 models equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, a component inside the fuel pump module can overheat and cut power to the fuel pump, stalling the engine or preventing the car from starting. A related issue on 2013 models involves the fuel delivery module cracking and leaking fuel, which can ignite if an ignition source is nearby.
On 2013–2014 models, the front halfshaft and linkshaft can disengage while driving, cutting power to the wheels and leaving the driver without drive force. The 2011–2013 model years have two structural and control issues: the electric power steering system can lose its assist, requiring noticeably more effort to steer at low speeds, and an interior door handle return spring can unseat so the handle stays partially actuated, allowing the door to unlatch in a side-impact crash. The 2011–2013 driver frontal airbag can inflate improperly during the second stage of deployment in a high-speed crash, raising the risk of injury to the driver.
Going back to the earliest production year, 2009 models have a rear suspension toe link that can break under dirt and mud buildup, causing a sudden loss of stability. This issue was specifically noted for vehicles operated in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The 2009 and 2011 model years also have a driver frontal airbag that can misfire during second-stage deployment in a severe crash.
