The 1999 Mazda 626 has 3 recalls, the most serious involving a brake master cylinder reservoir cap that lacks ventilation holes, which can cause the brakes to pull back when the vehicle sits parked and deliver reduced stopping power when you drive again.
The brake issue stems from pressure dropping inside the reservoir as brake pads wear and temperatures fall, eventually pulling the brake calipers and wheel cylinders back by vacuum. When the driver next applies the brakes, there is a longer pedal travel and reduced braking force before pressure builds back up, raising the risk of a crash. There is also an engine concern: a spring in the timing belt tensioner can break and get caught in the timing belt, which can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly.
