Summary
The Mazda3 has 39 recalls spanning the 2004–2025 model years, with the most serious recent issue being a forward sensing camera malfunction on 2024 models where automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist can stop working entirely, and high beams fail to dim automatically.
The 2024 model year carries two related camera display recalls: beyond the safety system failure, software errors on certain 2024 vehicles can cause the rearview, front, and side camera images to disappear from the screen entirely. On 2019–2020 models, the Smart Brake Support system can falsely detect an obstacle and brake hard with no hazard present, raising the risk of a rear-end collision. The 2019 model year has a notable cluster of issues: wheel lug nuts can loosen and allow a wheel to detach; front head restraints can fail to lock in position because seat cover material jams the release button; interior rearview mirrors on manual-dimming trim can separate from their housing; and the passenger airbag deactivation indicator light can go dark even when the airbag is turned off, hiding that status from the driver.
On the fuel system side, 2014–2016 production has multiple recalls where fuel tank weld failures or faulty shut-off valves can allow fuel to leak, creating a fire risk near an ignition source. The 2016–2018 model years share a windshield wiper relay defect that can render the wipers inoperative. The 2018 model has a separate concern: an incorrect exhaust valve spring can fail and stall the engine while driving. On 2020 models, front brake caliper mounting bolts may not have been properly torqued during assembly, allowing the calipers to loosen and reducing braking performance.
Going further back, 2014–2018 vehicles with a rearview camera can show a flickering or distorted image, reducing rear visibility. The 2010 model year has two issues: engine wiring that can chafe against the starter motor housing and short-circuit, potentially stalling the engine; and a driver seat height adjuster with components that can break and cause the seat to shift position abruptly. On 2007–2009 models, electric power steering assist can cut out without warning, requiring significantly more effort to steer. The 2007 model alone has a power steering high-pressure pipe that can shed rust particles into the pump and damage its bearings.
The earliest production years have their own concerns. On 2004–2007 models, the plastic Mazda logo on the steering wheel airbag cover can shatter when the airbag deploys, sending fragments toward occupants. On 2004 models specifically, the airbag crash sensor housing can crack and let water in, causing a short circuit that prevents airbag deployment in a frontal collision. A similar airbag non-deployment risk exists on 2005 models due to a cracked solder connection in the airbag control unit. The 2008 model has a windshield wiper motor ground terminal that can corrode over time and cause the wipers to fail, and the 2009 model has a stability control calibration that did not meet regulatory performance standards.
