Summary
The Mazda CX-5 has 9 recalls covering 2014 through 2018 model years, with the most serious being a powertrain control module software error on 2018 models where the valve clearance adjuster can fail, damage the engine internally, and cause the engine to stall while driving with no ability to restart.
The 2018 model year also has a side curtain airbag recall where the bags can fail to unfold properly during a side impact or rollover, reducing occupant protection and increasing ejection risk. Going back to the 2016 model year, LED daytime running lights can corrode at the circuit board due to a faulty connector gasket, causing one or both lights to flicker or go dark and making the vehicle less visible to other drivers. On 2017 models equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness, the harness can sit too close to the exhaust muffler, contact it, and melt or burn through the wiring, disabling trailer lights. The 2015 model year has a separate issue affecting replacement windshields equipped with a bracket for the Smart City Brake Support laser sensor: if that bracket loosens or detaches from the inside of the glass, the automatic braking system can stop functioning without warning. On 2014 through 2016 models, the fuel filler pipe can rupture in a rear-end collision, spilling fuel and raising the risk of a fire.
