4 recalls across 5 model years
The Mazda MX-6 has 4 recalls covering the 1993–1997 model years, with the most serious being an ignition switch defect across all years where grease inside the switch can become conductive, overheat, and start a fire.
The ignition switch issue affects the full 1993–1997 production run. Heat builds inside the switch itself, raising the risk of fire without any obvious warning to the driver. On 1993 models, front suspension lower ball joints may not have been tightened to the correct specification, which can cause the front suspension to fail while driving and result in sudden loss of steering control. The 1995 model year has two separate issues: a fuel filler pipe dimensional mismatch that allows fuel vapor and raw fuel to escape into the atmosphere, and an emissions control calibration that can cause carbon monoxide output to exceed regulatory limits with extended use.
