22 recalls across 6 model years
The Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 has 22 recalls covering 2020 through 2023 model years, with the most serious being a 48-volt ground connection under the passenger seat that can overheat on 2020-2023 vehicles and start a fire.
The 2022-2023 model years share a fuel pump defect that can shut down without warning, cutting drive power and leaving the vehicle unable to accelerate or maintain speed in traffic. Those same years also have rear door window trim bars that can detach while driving and become a road hazard for following traffic.
The 2020 model year carries the heaviest concentration of issues. On the fire risk side, air conditioner drain hoses installed incorrectly can route water into the front foot wells, where it can corrode or short-circuit electrical components. A separate fuel injector issue on 2020 vehicles can cause a fuel leak near hot engine or exhaust surfaces. The electronic stability control software on 2020 models can apply unexpected torque to a front wheel during a hard evasive maneuver, pulling the vehicle sideways. Front struts and rear shock absorbers on 2020 vehicles can lose their fluid seal prematurely, degrading handling and control. On 2020 vehicles equipped with the optional illuminated front grille star, a wiring conflict can cause the electric power steering, wiper motor, or left headlight to malfunction.
Occupant protection on 2020 models has several issues as well. The third-row seatback locks can fail in a crash on 2020-2022 vehicles, and front seat assembly errors on 2020 models can prevent the seat from properly restraining an occupant. The front airbag wiring harness on 2020 vehicles may be routed incorrectly, and a separate software error in the airbag control unit can cause the driver's airbag to deploy improperly, both reducing crash protection. The 2020 model also has a sunroof that can close unexpectedly when car wash mode is activated, a backup camera that can display a black screen or reboot on startup, interior switches that may not illuminate, and an automatic crash notification system that can fail to send emergency responders to the correct location.
