Summary
The Mercury Sable has 14 recalls spanning the 1986–1999 production run, with the most serious being a steering column lower shaft that can separate without warning on 1987 models, leaving the driver with no ability to steer the vehicle.
The other severity-5 issues are spread across several model years. On 1996 models, a parking pawl defect can prevent the transmission from fully engaging Park, allowing the vehicle to roll as if in Neutral; this affects both the base transmission and vehicles equipped with the Ford AX4S automatic transaxle. The 1996 model year also has a fuel system concern: vehicles that received a service replacement fuel tank between mid-1997 and late-1997 may have gotten an incorrect tank with an extra vent hole that can leak fuel. On 1987 models, the rear spindle stems can bend or break in service, causing sudden loss of vehicle control. The 1986 model has a corrosion-related subframe issue where the rear corners of the engine and transmission cradle can drop away from the body, making steering extremely difficult. On 1993 models registered in Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces, the front coil springs can fracture from corrosion and contact the tire, causing deflation and loss of control without warning.
Moving to severity-4 issues, 1998 models have front seatbelt buckle attachment studs that can crack, weakening their ability to hold an occupant in a crash. The 1999 model year has a similar front coil spring fracture risk in high-salt regions, where corrosion can cause a spring to break and deflate a tire. On 1989 models, certain seat belt buckles can fail to latch, fail to unlatch, or latch only partially, providing inadequate restraint in a crash. The 1990 model year has a headlamp control module with an incorrect transistor that can switch the headlights off while driving. Going back to 1986 station wagons, the electrical conductor strips for the rear wiper motor can erode from road salt exposure, creating a hot spot within the rear glass.
The remaining recalls are compliance-related: 1989 models were built with clear front side marker lamps instead of the required amber, and 1997 owner guides contained headlight aiming instructions that did not meet Canadian lighting standards.
