Summary
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has 10 recalls spanning the 2003–2015 production run, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2014–2015 models where an uncoated fuel tank can rust through, leak fuel, and create a fire risk.
Two additional fuel system concerns overlap with that era. On 2014 models, a parking brake cable routed too close to the fuel tank can abrade the tank's protective coating, eventually causing rust and a fuel leak. Also on 2014 models, a power steering pressure tube can sit too close to the crossmember brace, wear through from abrasion and rust, and leak fluid, making the steering noticeably heavier and raising crash risk.
The 2008–2013 model years carry a recall for clutch master cylinder failure, where the hydraulic system loses the ability to disengage the clutch, making it difficult or impossible to shift gears and creating the potential for unintended vehicle movement or a stall in traffic. A separate but related issue from the 2008 model year involves a fuel return pipe that can develop stress cracks and leak fuel near an ignition source; the 2009 model year has the same underlying concern on turbocharged variants.
Going further back, 2005 models have a turbocharger coolant hose that was incorrectly manufactured and can leak coolant onto the hot exhaust manifold, where it can ignite and start an engine fire.
The 2003 model year has a compliance recall for incorrect weight rating figures on the certification label, and 2008 models have a French-language tire pressure label showing an incorrect spare tire specification.
